The popular islands of Andaman are India's archipelago that promises to amaze and captivate at the same time. There are 572 islands, majorly divided into five broad categories - Great Andaman, Little Andaman, Ritchie's Archipelago, East Volcano Islands, and Sentinel Islands. Great Andaman is known for Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the best islands that have the classiest beaches, simply the ideal holiday destination for indulging in watersports activities. Even for marine species, there's nothing better than Great Andaman, which is home to the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. With shimmering turquoise waters fringed by primeval jungle, fantastic diving, and sugar-white, sun-toasted beaches melting under flame-and-purple sunsets, the far-flung Andaman Islands are the perfect Indian escape. If one has historically significant landmarks like Cellular Jail, Ross Island, Viper Island, Hopetown and Mount Harriet, while the others are the home ground to the extraordinary bird species, the traces of which can be seen only in the books.

Cellular Jailportblair, andaman

Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, stands as a dark reminiscence of the British rule in the Indian subcontinent. This most dreaded and gruelling colonial prison situated in the remote archipelago was used by the British particularly to exile Indian political prisoners. Isolated from the mainland, this jail, also referred as Kala Pani (where Kala means death or time and Pani means water in Sanskrit) witnessed the most atrocious punishments imposed on prisoners. India’s struggle for independence saw imminent freedom fighters like Batukeshwar Dutt and Veer Savarkar being incarcerated in this jail. The jail is now open to public viewing as a National Memorial, and its museum gives one a glimpse of years of India’s struggle for freedom.
