The Venni Karumbeeshwarar Temple is an ancient and revered Shiva temple located in Venni village, near Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity, Lord Karumbeeshwarar (a form of Lord Shiva), is worshipped here along with Goddess Soundaranayaki.
According to legend, the temple’s name “Venni” is derived from the sacred herb “Vennai” (butter) used in an ancient ritual performed by Lord Shiva to destroy the asuras (demons) who disturbed the peace of sages in this region. The Lord who appeared here after the victory was hence called “Karumbeeshwarar”, symbolizing strength and sweetness like sugarcane (karumbu in Tamil). Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Karumbeeshwarar helps remove life obstacles, grants good health, and brings peace and prosperity.
