Undavalli Caves are situated in the village of Undavalli, approximately 8 kilometers from Vijayawada, in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. The caves are known for their rock-cut architecture and are carved out of a solid sandstone hill. The site features monolithic rock-cut caves, showcasing a blend of Buddhist and Hindu architectural styles. The Undavalli Caves are believed to date back to the 4th to 5th centuries during the Gupta period. However, some additions and modifications were made during the later Vishnukundin and Kakatiya periods. The main cave houses a massive statue of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture, which is often identified as Anantasayana Vishnu. There are also other deities and intricate carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The largest cave is sometimes referred to as the "Chattanatha Temple" and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The rock-cut structure is adorned with impressive sculptures and carvings. While the main cave has Hindu deities, there are also indications of Buddhist influence, including a standing Buddha statue. This reflects the transition from Buddhism to Hinduism in the region.The location of Undavalli Caves provides a panoramic view of the Krishna River and its surroundings.
