Abathsagayeswarar Temple, located in Alangudi in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, is a highly revered Shiva temple known for its association with Guru Bhagavan (Jupiter). Lord Shiva here is worshipped as Abathsagayeswarar, meaning "the one who rescues devotees from danger," while Goddess Parvati is enshrined as Elavarkuzhali Ammai. This temple is one of the Navagraha Sthalams, dedicated specifically to Guru (Jupiter), making it a popular pilgrimage site for those seeking relief from Guru dosha and astrological afflictions. According to legends, Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison (Halahala) during the churning of the ocean here, to save the universe an act that earned him the name “Abathsagayeswarar.” Another story links the temple’s origin to King Masukuntha Chakravarti, who, after mistakenly killing his loyal minister Amuthokar, built the temple in repentance. The temple’s name, “Alangudi,” means “the place where poison was drunk,” and its spiritual layout is said to reflect the sequence of Matha (Mother), Pitha (Father), and Guru (Teacher), representing Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Dakshinamurthy. The sacred temple tank is believed to possess curative powers, and rituals begin with a holy dip.
