About Adikesava Perumal Temple

The Adikesava Perumal Temple, located in Thiruvattar in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, is an ancient and revered temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his reclining form as Adikesava Perumal. Situated between three rivers Kothai, Pahrali, and Thamiraparani the temple is surrounded by natural beauty and spiritual energy. It is considered one of the 108 Divya Desams, the holiest shrines for Vaishnavites, and is closely associated with the famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. According to legend, the demon Kesi and his wife tried to disrupt a Yagna performed by Lord Brahma. Lord Vishnu defeated Kesi, but before dying, the demon invoked the Ganges and Thamirabarani rivers to flood the area. In response, Bhoodevi created a mount to divert the waters, causing the rivers to flow in a circular path around the temple. This divine formation gave rise to the name Thiruvattaru, meaning "sacred circular river." After defeating Kesi, Vishnu came to be worshipped here as Adi Kesavan. The temple’s architecture is a beautiful blend of Dravidian and Kerala styles, featuring intricately carved wooden ceilings, granite pillars, and vibrant mural paintings. The main deity lies in a majestic 22-foot-long reclining posture on the serpent Anantha, facing west a rare feature in South Indian temples. Crafted from 16,008 sacred Saligramams, the idol exudes divine energy. The sanctum also houses depictions of Brahma, Shiva, and other deities. Steeped in myth and surrounded by lush greenery, the Adikesava Perumal Temple is not just a site of architectural marvel but a place of deep spiritual significance, offering peace, prosperity, and blessings to all who visit.
