Agnipureeswarar Temple

The Agnipureeswarar Temple in Vanniyur, near Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, is a revered and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Agnipureeswarar, the "Lord of Fire." The temple’s name originates from a powerful legend in which Agni, the fire god, was cursed after attending a yagna where Shiva was insulted. Unable to participate in further rituals, Agni created a sacred pond (Agni Theertham), worshipped a Shiva Lingam here with Vanni leaves, and was finally absolved of the curse by Lord Shiva. Another legend states that preparations for Goddess Parvati’s divine marriage to Shiva began at this very site, making it significant for those praying for marriage blessings. The temple is also linked to Banasura, who failed to uproot the Shiva Lingam, and to Sundarar, the saint who received divine assistance bricks turned into gold at this spot. The temple houses Goddess Soundaranayaki and is known for its tranquil ambiance, ideal for inner purification and relief from karmic burdens. Worship here is believed to cure skin diseases, heat-related illnesses, and doshas linked to Mars and the Sun.
