About Aiyarappar temple

Aiyarappar temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the village of Tiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is incarnated by the hymns of Thevaram and is classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. Thiruvaiyaru means Five Rivers around the city. The Five Rivers are Arisilaaru, Vennaaru, Vettaaru, Kudamuruttiyaaru and Kaaviriyaaru.Aiyarappar Koil, ThiruvaiyaruSapthasthanam is the most important festival Tiruvaiyaru conducted during April every year. The thirteen day festival culminates with Dwajarohanam in each of the seven temples, when the flag is hosted in the flagpost amidst chanting of vedic texts. The glass palanquin of the Aiyarappar housing the festive image of Aiyarappar, Dharmasamvardhini and Nandhi is carried in procession to all the six temples in the order of Apathsahayar Temple at Tirupazhanam, Odhanavaneswarar Temple at Tiruchotruthurai, Vedapuriswarar Temple at Thiruvedhikudi, Kandeeswarar Temple at Thirukkandiyur, Pushpavananathar Temple at Thiruppoonthruthi and Neyyadiappar Temple at Tiruneithaanam. The palanquin returns to the temple on the last day of the festival to Aiyarappar temple, along with the palanquins of all the other six temples. Hundreds of people witness the convergence of seven glass palanquins carrying principal deities of respective temples from seven places at Tiruvaiyaru. The palanquins are paraded near the car stand, the crowd witnessed the Poochorithal(flower festival) in which a doll offers flowers to the principal deities in the palanquins. After the Poochorithal, the palanquins return their respective temples. The temple is located in the town of Thiruvayaru. Easy to locate by google maps.This temple is very old and called Dakshina Kailash. The presiding deity is named after 5 rivers at Thiruvayaru; 2 shrines - Uttara Kailasham and Dhakshina Kailasham are present in the temple. Shiva Linga is Swyambu in this temple and circumambulation is not allowed representing the Jadaa-mudi of Shiva. The temple hosts beautiful paintings and sculptures. The temple is quite big and one of the biggest temples in Tamilnadu.
