The Kulasai Mutharamman Temple, located in Kulasekharapattinam in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district, is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Mutharamman, a fierce and benevolent form of Shakti (Amman). Set near the Gulf of Mannar coast, this temple is over 300 years old and holds immense religious and cultural significance, especially in southern Tamil Nadu. According to legend, the goddess was initially worshipped in her Swayambhu (self-manifested) form. The temple priest and sculptor Subbaiya Asari both received divine instructions in dreams to create her idol from a sacred stone near Kanyakumari. Following this vision, Subbaiya Asari sculpted the idols of Mutharamman and Swamy Gnanamoorthiswarar, which were then installed in the temple. The town’s name is said to come from King Kulasekaran, who received a divine vision of the goddess. The temple’s famed Dussehra festival also connects to the myth of Mahishasura, a cursed form of Saint Varamuni, who was slain by the goddess, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The temple is most famous for its grand Dussehra (Dasara) festival, during which millions of devotees gather in vibrant costumes, often dressed as gods, goddesses, or mythological characters. This unique tradition, known as "Annadhanam" and "Disguise Worship", involves devotees undertaking penance and dressing in elaborate getups as a form of offering to the Goddess. The festival lasts for 10 days, culminating in a massive procession and fire-walking ritual. Beyond the festival, devotees visit the temple year-round seeking blessings for health, protection, marriage, and fertility. The Goddess is believed to remove fear, destroy evil forces, and offer strength to face life’s challenges. With its strong spiritual energy, rich traditions, and coastal charm, Kulasai Mutharamman Temple continues to draw pilgrims and spiritual seekers from across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
