Chakrapani Swami Temple in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Chakrapani, the divine manifestation of the Sudarshana Chakra (celestial discus). The temple holds immense spiritual importance and is one of the prominent Vishnu temples in Kumbakonam, noted for its powerful iconography, west-facing deity, and ancient legends. According to one legend, Vishnu took on a snake form after accepting a curse meant for his devotee Garuda. Seeking relief, he prayed to Lord Shiva, who appeared as Chakrapani and freed him, leading to the consecration of this temple at that sacred site. Another myth narrates the slaying of the demon Jalandhara by the Sudarshana Chakra, which then emerged from the Kaveri River and landed in Brahma’s lap during a yajna. Awed by its divine energy, Brahma established the temple. The legend also speaks of Surya (Sun God) repenting for his jealousy toward the Chakra’s power. Architecturally, the temple features a striking five-tiered Rajagopuram and a sanctum where Lord Chakrapani is shown with eight arms holding various weapons. The temple is especially powerful for relief from doshas, evil forces, and planetary afflictions, attracting devotees during Sudarshana Homam rituals.
