About Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji is situated in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, approximately 56 kilometers southwest of Shillong, the state capital. Cherrapunji experiences a subtropical highland climate. It receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, contributing to its lush greenery. The town is known for its beautiful misty landscapes. Cherrapunji held the record for the highest annual rainfall in a single year until it was surpassed by another Meghalaya town, Mawsynram. Nevertheless, Cherrapunji still receives substantial rainfall and is famous for its perpetual mist and drizzle. One of the most famous attractions near Cherrapunji is Nohkalikai Falls, which is one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India. The falls plunge from a height of approximately 340 meters. Similar to Mawlynnong, Cherrapunji is known for its living root bridges. These natural bridges are formed by guiding the roots of rubber trees across streams. Visitors to Cherrapunji can explore the Mawsmai Cave, a limestone cave with impressive stalactite formations. It's a popular destination for cave enthusiasts. Cherrapunji is home to a famous double-decker living root bridge in the village of Nongriat. This unique bridge is an example of the traditional Khasi technique of creating bridges from living tree roots. The town offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and waterfalls. The landscape is dotted with terraced fields, making for a picturesque setting. This park is known for its viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the Bangladesh plains. It's a great spot for photography and enjoying the scenery. Cherrapunji's unique climate, stunning landscapes, and natural attractions make it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The town's association with record-breaking rainfall and its lush greenery contribute to its allure.
