Nagore Dargah, located in the coastal town of Nagore in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district, is one of South India's most revered Islamic pilgrimage sites. Dedicated to Hazrat Syed Shahul Hameed Qadir Wali, a 16th-century Sufi saint from Arabia, the dargah’s origin is deeply rooted in spiritual legacy. After settling in Nagore, Shahul Hameed became known for his miraculous deeds, including curing King Achutappa Nayak of Thanjavur by removing pins from a pigeon believed to be the source of the king's ailment. In gratitude, the king donated land for the saint’s entourage and burial site. The saint foretold his death and was buried in Nagore, with his mausoleum built by his followers. Later, the Maratha ruler Pratap Singh added the tallest minaret, the 131-foot Periya Minara, as a token of gratitude after his wish for a son was fulfilled. The dargah’s striking architecture features intricately carved domes and a serene white façade that glows in sunlight. Every year, the Kandhuri Festival, a 14-day event honoring the saint’s anniversary, draws thousands from across India and abroad. Symbolizing communal harmony, Nagore Dargah continues to attract people of all faiths seeking peace, healing, and blessings standing tall as a testament to Tamil Nadu’s syncretic heritage and enduring devotion.
