About Kangra

Kangra is situated in the western Himalayas and is the headquarters of the Kangra district. It is nestled in the Kangra Valley and is surrounded by the Dhauladhar mountain range. The town of Kangra has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. It was the capital of the princely state of Kangra, which was one of the leading hill states under the British Raj. The Kangra Fort is one of the main attractions in the region. It is one of the oldest forts in India and has a history dating back over 3500 years. The fort is known for its architectural grandeur and is situated on the confluence of the Banganga and Majhi rivers. Kangra is home to several ancient temples, including the Brajeshwari Devi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Brajeshwari (an incarnation of Goddess Durga). The temple has a rich history but was damaged and rebuilt multiple times, including after the devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake. The Kangra Valley is known for its picturesque landscapes, surrounded by tea gardens, lush greenery, and the snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhar range.
