Kappal Matha Church

Kappal Matha Church, also known as Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, is a unique and visually striking Catholic church located in Uvari, a coastal village in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district. The church is named “Kappal Matha” (meaning “Ship Mother”) because of its extraordinary architecture the entire structure is built in the shape of a ship, symbolizing protection and guidance for seafarers and travelers. This church is dedicated to Mother Mary, revered here as a guardian for fishermen and those undertaking difficult journeys. According to local legend, the origins of the church trace back to a Portuguese shipwreck, during which a statue of St. Anthony of Padua was brought ashore to Uvari. Initially kept in a humble hut, the statue eventually inspired the construction of the current church. Over time, miraculous events including visions of a bright light around the statue of Selva Matha enhanced the church’s spiritual significance. Nestled along the scenic shoreline of the Bay of Bengal, the church offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Its interiors are simple yet peaceful, with devotional paintings and a statue of the Virgin Mary at the helm, resembling a ship's bow. Kappal Matha Church is known for its annual feast and draws pilgrims seeking blessings for healing, protection, and peace making it both a religious sanctuary and an architectural marvel on Tamil Nadu’s southern coast.
