Kaasi Viswanathar Temple, Tenkasi is Located in the picturesque town of Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu, the Kaasi Viswanathar Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Kaasi Viswanathar. Often called the “Southern Kashi,” it draws countless spiritual seekers who believe that a pilgrimage here holds the same merit as visiting Kashi (Varanasi) in North India. According to legend, King Parakrama Pandian planned to travel to Kasi to bring back a Shiva Lingam for a new temple. But Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and guided him to follow an ant trail to a divine site. The next day, the king followed a line of ants to a Swayambhu Lingam near an anthill by the Chitra River. Taking this as divine guidance, the king and his brother Sadaya Varman Kulasekara Pandian built the temple at that sacred location. Constructed in the 15th century, the temple is renowned for its stunning Dravidian architecture, especially the 180-foot gopuram, adorned with intricate carvings of mythological and spiritual motifs. Inside the sanctum lies the sacred Lingam, along with shrines for Goddess Ulagamman, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Murugan. A unique feature is the musical stone pillars, which produce different notes when tapped. Set amidst lush hills and near the famed Courtallam Waterfalls, the temple is both a spiritual haven and a scenic retreat. With daily rituals, grand celebrations like Mahashivaratri, and centuries of legend, Kaasi Viswanathar Temple stands as a powerful symbol of devotion and divine presence in southern India.
