About Sarangapani Temple

Sarangapani Temple in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most revered Divya Desams, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The deity here is worshipped as Sarangapani Perumal, and the temple is famed for its rich Dravidian architecture, religious significance, and historical legacy. It is considered one of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alwars (Vaishnavite saints). The temple’s main sanctum is shaped like a chariot drawn by horses and elephants, symbolizing Vishnu's descent to Earth. The presiding deity lies in a unique Uttana Sayana (reclining) posture, facing the direction of the river Kaveri. According to legend, Lord Vishnu arrived here in a chariot to marry Lakshmi, who was born as Komalavalli Thayar. Another legend connects the temple’s origin to a divine pot (kumbha) carrying the seeds of life, which broke during a great deluge at this very site giving the town its name, Kumbakonam. Additionally, it is believed that Brahma was cursed and reborn as Jnanasambandar, who was found and raised in Kumbakonam, and the temple stands where he was discovered. With a towering 12-tiered Rajagopuram rising to about 173 feet, this spiritual and architectural marvel continues to attract devotees and history lovers alike.
