Tsomgo Lake, Sikkim A Sacred High Altitude Wonder. Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a stunning glacial lake situated at an altitude of about 12,400 feet (3,780 meters) above sea level in East Sikkim, approximately 40 km from Gangtok. Nestled amidst towering snow capped mountains and steep winding roads, this high altitude lake offers breathtaking views and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sikkim. The lake remains frozen during the winter months, transforming the entire landscape into a magical, snow covered wonderland. Tsomgo Lake holds spiritual significance for the local people and is considered sacred by the Sikkimese, especially the Buddhist and Hindu communities. Monks used to study the lake’s color to predict the future. During spring and summer, the lake is surrounded by blooming rhododendrons, primulas, and other alpine flowers, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers. Yaks and mules are available for rides around the lake, adding to the experience. Tourists are required to obtain a special permit to visit, due to its proximity to the Indo China border. The lake’s serene beauty, combined with its cultural and geographical significance, makes Tsomgo a must visit gem in the Sikkim Himalayas.
