About Mathur Aqueduct

The Mathur Aqueduct, also known as Mathoor Hanging Trough, is an iconic engineering structure and popular tourist attraction located near Thiruvattar in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Built in 1966 as part of a drought-relief measure, this unique aqueduct carries irrigation water from one hill to another across the Pahrali River, supplying water to the agricultural fields of the southern regions. What makes Mathur Aqueduct extraordinary is its impressive length of 1,000 feet (around 300 meters) and height of nearly 115 feet (35 meters), making it one of the tallest and longest aqueducts in South Asia. Supported by 28 massive pillars, the structure features a narrow pedestrian pathway alongside the water trough, allowing visitors to walk high above the lush green valley and enjoy panoramic views of the Western Ghats. Surrounded by dense vegetation, coconut groves, and serene hillscapes, the aqueduct provides a thrilling experience for nature lovers, photographers, and history enthusiasts alike.
