About Nag Temple Kufri

Nag Temple, located atop Mahasu Peak in Kufri, Himachal Pradesh, is a serene hilltop shrine dedicated to Nag Devta, the revered Snake God. According to legend, King Bhagsu angered the deity by stealing water from the holy Nag Dal Lake. Seeking forgiveness, the king built this temple to honor Nag Devta. The temple is uniquely known for opening only once a year, on the auspicious day of Naag Panchami, when locals believe the priest has a divine vision of the deity. Surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped Himalayan peaks, the temple offers a tranquil setting that blends nature and spirituality. Although modest in structure, it holds immense significance among locals who believe Nag Devta protects the region from natural disasters and blesses them with prosperity. During festivals, traditional rituals and offerings are made in devotion. Accessible via foot or horseback, the trail to the temple is part of a scenic trek through Kufri’s forest paths. From the top, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the valleys and mountains. The Nag Temple is not only a sacred site but a cultural symbol, offering a peaceful retreat filled with faith, folklore, and breathtaking beauty.
