The Palani Thiru Avinankudi Temple, located at the base of the Palani Hills in Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest and most revered temples dedicated to Lord Murugan. Considered part of the Arupadai Veedu (six sacred abodes of Murugan), this temple is believed to be where Murugan resided during his early years and is deeply associated with his childhood and divine grace.
The temple is known for its serene setting amidst lush greenery and a calm spiritual atmosphere. Devotees often visit this temple before beginning their climb to the hilltop Palani Murugan Temple, considering it an auspicious starting point. The sanctum houses Lord Murugan in a youthful form, known as Baladhandayuthapani, along with consorts Valli and Deivanai.
According to legend, Sage Bhogar crafted the hilltop idol of Murugan using Navapashanam, a mystical blend believed to have healing powers. The temple is also linked to the story of Idumban, who, while carrying the hills Sivagiri and Sakthigiri, was halted by Murugan, giving rise to the Kavadi tradition. Another tale recalls how Murugan, upset after a divine mango dispute, chose Palani as his home, where he is worshipped as a renunciate. The town’s ancient name, Tiruvavinankudi, is believed to have evolved into Palani after Shiva and Parvati lovingly called Murugan “Pazham Nee” (You are the fruit).
With ancient Tamil inscriptions and traditional architecture, the temple draws thousands of pilgrims daily. Festivals like Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram are celebrated with great devotion. Worship at Thiru Avinankudi is believed to grant blessings for health, success, and relief from family troubles, making it a sacred and essential stop for Murugan devotees.
