Pamban Bridge is an iconic railway bridge connecting the island of Rameswaram to the mainland of Tamil Nadu. Opened in 1914, it was India’s first sea bridge and remained the longest until the Bandra Worli Sea Link was built. Spanning over 2.3 km across the Palk Strait, this engineering marvel is built on 143 piers and includes a unique double leaf bascule section that can be lifted to allow ships and ferries to pass through. The bridge offers a spectacular view of the vast blue sea, fishing boats, and the scenic coastline. It is especially thrilling to witness a train slowly moving across the bridge, seemingly floating above the water. The sea breeze, the rhythmic sound of waves, and the panoramic view make it a photographer’s delight and a must-visit spot for travelers heading to Rameswaram. A new parallel road bridge, called the Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge, runs alongside and is equally scenic for road travelers. The Pamban Bridge not only serves as a vital transport link but also stands as a symbol of India’s engineering brilliance and heritage. Visiting this bridge is both a visual treat and a spiritual prelude to the sacred town of Rameswaram.
