Peer Mohammed Dargah

Peer Mohammed Dargah, located in Thuckalay in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, is a revered Islamic pilgrimage site dedicated to the great Sufi saint Peer Mohammed Appa. Born in Tenkasi, Peer Mohammed was a deeply spiritual poet, scholar, and reformer who spread the values of love, peace, and unity through his teachings. He is known for composing devotional poetry in both Tamil and Arabic, which bridged religious and cultural divides in the region. The dargah marks the final resting place of the saint, who was invited to Thuckalay by the Travancore royal family. According to local tradition, Peer Mohammed played a pivotal role in promoting communal harmony and guiding people with his spiritual insights. After his passing, the place where he was laid to rest became a sacred site. The white-domed shrine was built by devotees in his honor, and it continues to attract pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and beyond. The most significant event here is the Urs festival, held annually to commemorate the saint’s death anniversary. It is marked by special prayers, Sufi music, and the gathering of people from different faiths truly reflecting the inclusive and peaceful message Peer Mohammed preached throughout his life.
