About Punakha

Punakha is a district and a town in the Kingdom of Bhutan, situated in the western part of the country. It was the capital of Bhutan until the capital was moved to Thimphu. Punakha is known for its historical significance, cultural attractions, and scenic landscapes. Punakha Dzong is one of the most iconic and historically important dzongs (fortresses) in Bhutan. It is situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers. The dzong is known for its architecture and the sacred artifacts it houses. Also known as the "Temple of the Divine Madman," Chimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist temple dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, a saint known for his unorthodox teachings. The temple is a pilgrimage site and is associated with fertility. Located on a ridge overlooking the Punakha Valley, this nunnery offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is a center for Buddhist studies and meditation. The suspension bridge over the Pho Chhu River is one of the longest in Bhutan. It connects Punakha Dzong with the Punakha town and is a picturesque spot. The valley itself is characterized by terraced fields, traditional Bhutanese farmhouses, and a relatively mild climate. It provides a serene and beautiful setting for visitors. While Dochula Pass is not directly in Punakha, it is a high mountain pass on the road from Thimphu to Punakha. It offers panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas and features the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. Ritsha is a small village in Punakha known for its traditional Bhutanese architecture and the cultivation of red rice. Punakha is a destination that offers a rich cultural experience combined with natural beauty. The historical dzong, temples, and the scenic surroundings make it a popular choice for tourists seeking an immersive Bhutanese experience. Punakha is accessible by road from Thimphu, and the journey offers picturesque views. The town is part of many Bhutanese tour itineraries, and travelers often combine visits to Punakha with other nearby destinations.
