About Sri Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple

Ramanathaswamy Temple, located in the sacred town of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, is one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and holds immense significance in Hinduism. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and also part of the Char Dham Yatra, making it a major spiritual destination for pilgrims across India. Built in traditional Dravidian architecture, the temple is renowned for its longest corridor in Asia, stretching over 1,200 meters, supported by intricately carved 1,200+ pillars. The symmetry and grandeur of these corridors create a visually mesmerizing experience. The temple’s spiritual legacy is deeply tied to the Ramayana. According to legend, Lord Rama needed to atone for killing Ravana, who was a Brahmin. Advised by sages, Rama sought to worship Lord Shiva and instructed Hanuman to bring a lingam from the Himalayas. As Hanuman’s return was delayed, Sita crafted a lingam from sand to ensure the ritual occurred at the auspicious time. Both lingams the sand lingam (Ramanathaswamy) and the Vishwalingam brought by Hanuman are enshrined within the temple today. Devotees also bathe in the 22 holy theerthams (sacred water tanks) within the temple complex, believed to cleanse sins and purify the soul. With its blend of spiritual power, mythological history, and architectural splendor, the Ramanathaswamy Temple stands as a timeless beacon of faith, devotion, and divine energy.
