About Ranganatha Swamy Temple

Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most revered temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here in a reclining posture as Ranganatha. It is the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples) and stands as the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world, spread across 156 acres. Situated on an island formed by the Cauvery and Kollidam rivers, the temple is a spiritual and architectural marvel. The temple's origins trace back thousands of years, with legends linking it to Lord Rama, who gifted the Ranganatha idol to King Vibhishana of Lanka. However, the idol was destined to remain in Srirangam, where it was installed and worshipped. The temple has 21 majestic gopurams, the tallest being the Rajagopuram, soaring to 236 feet.It was also the second tallest gopuram in Asia as of the year 2016. Intricate carvings, pillared halls, and centuries-old inscriptions reflect rich Dravidian craftsmanship. Pilgrims flock here for the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival and for spiritual merit.
