About Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves are a unique and historical site located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. These caves are renowned for their ancient rock engravings and have both historical and archaeological significance. Edakkal Caves are situated on Ambukutty Mala in the Wayanad district of Kerala, on the Western Ghats. The caves are nestled amidst picturesque surroundings and offer panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the valleys below. The caves are not natural caves but rather fissures and clefts formed by a large split in a huge rock. The name "Edakkal" means "in-between the stone" in Malayalam, reflecting the formation of the caves. One of the most significant aspects of Edakkal Caves is the presence of prehistoric rock engravings that date back to the Neolithic period. These petroglyphs depict various symbols, human figures, and animals, providing insights into the lifestyle and beliefs of the people from that era. The petroglyphs are believed to be around 6,000 years old, making them an important archaeological find. The engravings are considered to be some of the earliest evidence of human settlement in the region. To reach Edakkal Caves, visitors need to undertake a trek of around 1.5 kilometers uphill from the parking area. The trek itself is an enjoyable experience as it passes through scenic landscapes. The caves are situated on Ambukuthi Mala, which is part of the Western Ghats. The hill and its surroundings are rich in flora and fauna, adding to the overall natural beauty of the area. Visitors are typically allowed entry to the caves during specific hours, and guided tours are available to provide information about the history, archaeology, and cultural significance of Edakkal Caves. The hill provides excellent viewpoints, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. It's a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Edakkal Caves attract both history enthusiasts and nature lovers due to their unique combination of ancient rock engravings and stunning natural surroundings.
