Brahadambal Temple, also known as Ara Kasu Amman Temple, is a revered and ancient temple located in Thirukokarnam, just 5 km from Pudukottai. Also referred to as Kokarneswarar Temple, Gokarneswarar Temple, or Thirugokarnam Temple, it stands as one of South India's oldest rock-cut temples, dating back to the 7th century AD. Believed to have been built by Pallava king Mahendravarma I, the temple has been expanded and enhanced by successive dynasties including the Cholas, Pandyas, Nayakas, and the Thondaiman kings. The presiding deity is Lord Kokarneswarar (a form of Shiva), worshipped along with Goddess Brihadambal, who was the family deity of the Thondaiman rulers. An idol of Sadasiva Brahmananda, the spiritual guru of the Thondaiman kings, sits beneath a sacred Bakula tree within the complex. The temple is steeped in mythological lore. According to legend, Kamadhenu, the divine cow, was cursed by Lord Indra and sent to Earth. Seeking redemption, she worshipped Lord Shiva at this very site under the guidance of sage Kapila. Carrying holy Ganges water in her ears, she performed abhishekam daily, earning Shiva the name Gokarneswarar ("Lord of the cow’s ear"). One day, on her return from the Ganges, Kamadhenu encountered a tiger. She pleaded to complete her worship first. The tiger agreed but upon her return, she found Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had appeared in place of the tiger and took her back to the celestial realm. Adding to the temple's mystique is the legend of the Ara Kasu. A Thondaiman king once recovered a lost royal document after praying to Goddess Brahadambal. Grateful, he minted semi-circular coins called "Ara Kasu", featuring the goddess’s image. From then on, she became fondly known as "Ara Kasu Amman", and devotees believe she grants the return of lost items when prayed to sincerely. The temple is also known for its architectural richness, featuring exquisite relief sculptures, carved pillars, and over 30 inscriptions from the 7th to 17th centuries. Once a thriving center for classical dance and music, it also houses five beautifully crafted temple chariots, reflecting the temple’s cultural and spiritual prominence.
