About Sittanavasal Cave

Sittanavasal is situated about 16 kilometers southwest of Pudukkottai town in the state of Tamil Nadu. The site is known for its ancient Jain rock-cut cave temples and frescoes. It holds historical and cultural importance, dating back to the Jain period. The cave temples at Sittanavasal are carved into the rock and are associated with the Jain tradition. They are believed to have been created during the 7th to 9th centuries. Sittanavasal is renowned for its fresco paintings that adorn the cave walls. These paintings depict various themes, including religious motifs, court scenes, and daily life during the ancient period. The frescoes are considered among the oldest and finest surviving examples of ancient Tamil art. The Aruna Rock Sculpture, depicting the Sun God's chariot, is one of the notable attractions at Sittanavasal. It is carved on a separate rock near the cave complex. The frescoes and carvings often feature Jain ascetics in different postures and settings, providing insights into the lifestyle and practices of the Jain community during that period. Sittanavasal is accessible by road, and it's a popular destination for history enthusiasts, archaeologists, and tourists interested in ancient art and culture. The site has been an important archaeological discovery, shedding light on the artistic and religious practices of the region during ancient times. Efforts have been made to preserve the frescoes and the archaeological site to ensure that future generations can appreciate and study the historical and cultural significance of Sittanavasal.
