St. Joseph’s Church, Perumpannaiyur Nestled in the tranquil village of Perumpannaiyur in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur district, St. Joseph’s Church is a striking remnant of colonial-era ecclesiastical architecture built between 1871 and 1919 by local Christian landowner Sinnu Udayar and completed by his nephew Periasami Udayar. The church stands out with its soaring façade, tall bell towers still unfinished and imposing European-inspired features like an inverted wine-glass dome, spires, stained glass windows, and arched colonnades. Inside, visitors are awed by the intricately carved wooden altar, adorned with statues of Jesus, St. Joseph, St. Francis Xavier, and Indianized depictions of Mary in a blue sari, polished to a stone like sheen. Antique terracotta figurines and gilded chalices engraved in Latin add historical depth and artistry to the space. The church, now under the Thanjavur Diocese, serves around 500 local families and remains active as a place of worship, especially bustling during Christmas when its nativity crib (kutil) becomes a focal point for visitors. Despite its grandeur, St. Joseph’s faces ongoing conservation challenges such as vegetation growth in the walls, weathering, and unfinished structures. Local efforts are underway to restore and preserve its historic and architectural legacy .
