Suryanar Kovil

Suryanar Kovil is situated about 15 kilometers from Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The temple is easily accessible by road. The main deity of the temple is Lord Surya, the Sun God, who is worshiped as the principal deity. The presiding deity is known by various names, including Suryanarayana, Suryanar, and Aditya. The temple exhibits traditional Dravidian architecture. It features a pyramidical tower (rajagopuram) at the entrance and various halls and shrines within the complex. Suryanar Kovil is considered one of the Navagraha temples, dedicated to the nine celestial bodies or planets in Hindu astrology. In this temple, it is specifically dedicated to Lord Surya, representing the Sun. The temple complex houses separate shrines for each of the Navagrahas, representing the nine planets. Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings and mitigate the adverse effects of planetary positions in their horoscopes. The annual festival of Ratha Saptami is celebrated with grandeur at Suryanar Kovil. It is believed that on this day, the Sun God traverses the celestial sphere in a chariot drawn by seven horses. Daily pujas and rituals are performed at the temple to honor Lord Surya. Devotees offer prayers to seek blessings for good health, prosperity, and overall well-being. The temple complex typically includes a sacred tank (temple pond) where devotees can take a ceremonial dip. Apart from Ratha Saptami, other festivals associated with Lord Surya, such as Makar Sankranti, are celebrated with enthusiasm at the temple. The temple is well-connected by road, and devotees visiting Kumbakonam often include Suryanar Kovil as part of their pilgrimage.
