The Thiruthani Murugan Temple, located near Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu, is one of the sacred Arupadai Veedu (six abodes) of Lord Murugan. Perched atop a hill with 365 steps, symbolizing each day of the year, the temple exudes serenity and divine energy. After vanquishing the demon Surapadman, Lord Murugan came to Thiruthani to calm his battle fury, giving the hill its name “Thanigai”, meaning "cooling down" or "peace."
According to legends, Murugan married Devasena, daughter of Indra, at this temple. As part of the wedding dowry, Indra offered his white elephant Airavatam. Later, regretting the loss of his wealth, Indra asked that the elephant at least face his direction hence, elephants in the temple face east. The temple is also believed to be the place where Lord Rama came to seek peace after defeating Ravana, and where the serpent king Vasuki was healed from injuries caused during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan).
This sacred site is where Murugan gave the divine Vel (spear) to Sage Agastya to uphold dharma. Revered in ancient Tamil texts like the Tirumurugatruppadai and Tiruppugazh, the temple is built in classic Dravidian style with a grand gopuram and multiple precincts.
Its spiritual ambiance and panoramic views draw thousands of devotees, especially during Skanda Sashti, Panguni Uthiram, and Thaipusam. Worship here is believed to bless devotees with victory, courage, healing, peace of mind, and success in all aspects of life.
