The Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the largest and holiest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Arunachaleswarar, representing the element of fire (Agni) among the Pancha Bhootha Sthalams. Sprawling across 25 acres, the temple is a grand display of Dravidian architecture, with majestic gopurams, intricately carved pillars, and vast courtyards that attract pilgrims, history lovers, and spiritual seekers alike. The eastern Rajagopuram, rising to about 66 meters, is one of the tallest temple towers in India.
According to legend, Lord Shiva appeared as a towering pillar of fire to settle a dispute between Vishnu and Brahma about supremacy. When neither could find the beginning nor end of the fire, they acknowledged Shiva's infinite power. That divine column of fire is believed to have transformed into the sacred Arunachala Hill, at the foot of which the temple stands. Another tale recounts how Parvati playfully closed Shiva’s eyes, casting the world into darkness. To restore light, Shiva manifested as the fiery Arunachala, and Parvati later performed penance here, leading to their union as Ardhanarishvara.
The temple complex includes sacred tanks like Brahma Teertham and the revered Pathala Lingam, where Sri Ramana Maharshi attained deep meditation. The monthly Girivalam (circumambulation) around the hill draws lakhs of devotees, especially on full moon nights. During Karthigai Deepam, a massive flame is lit atop the hill, symbolizing Shiva as the infinite pillar of fire, marking the temple as a powerful center of spiritual energy and devotion.
