Vaduvoor Bird Sanctuary Nestled in Thiruvarur district’s lush Cauvery delta, Vaduvoor Bird Sanctuary (128 ha) is a vital haven for over 40 waterbird species and 138 recorded avifauna, including painted storks, spot‑billed pelicans, Eurasian wigeon, black headed ibis, and even rare greater flamingos and fruit bats. Established in 1999, this freshwater lake sanctuary is fed by monsoon rains and the Mettur Dam, and features floating aquatic flora and interconnected canals ideal habitats for nesting and migration. Every year between November and early February, up to 30,000–50,000 migratory birds flock here from as far as Europe, Russia, and the Americas . His sanctuary remains peaceful busy mostly with birds rather than tourists, though two watchtowers, benches, a kilometre long trail, binocular rentals, and optional bicycles offer immersive wildlife viewing .
