The Koodal Azhagar Temple, nestled in the heart of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is a sacred Vaishnavite shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, revered here as Koodal Azhagar. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, making it an important pilgrimage site for Vishnu devotees. "Koodal" refers to ancient Madurai, while "Azhagar" means "the beautiful one," symbolizing the divine beauty of Lord Vishnu. The temple is known for its architectural marvels, including a five-tiered Rajagopuram, intricately carved pillars, and an unusual three-tiered sanctum where Lord Vishnu is worshipped in three postures sitting, standing, and reclining a rare temple feature. Legends enrich the temple’s heritage. One story tells of King Satyavrata, who discovered a divine fish in the Krithimala River, believed to be Lord Vishnu, which later became the Pandya emblem. Another tale involves Vishnucitta (Periyalvar), who proved Vishnu’s supremacy through Vedic wisdom and was blessed by the Lord. Vishnu is also believed to have appeared here to slay the demon Somuka, who stole the Vedas. The temple’s vimana is said to have been crafted by the divine architect Vishwakarma, featuring stunning stucco images. The Koodal Azhagar Temple beautifully blends spiritual significance, mythological legends, and artistic excellence.
